Fiona Oakes – Inspiration & Compassion.
Fiona Oakes is an absolute legend, inspiration, fighter and, frankly, a hero to anyone with compassion and drive. I don’t know her personally; but she is on Facebook for anyone who wants to contact and support her. She is simply amazing. On her foundation website (http://www.fionaoakesfoundation.co.uk) it says: “Fiona holds five marathon course records – The North Pole Marathon, The Antarctic Ice Marathon, the Ruska Marathon, The Dartmoor Vale Marathon and the Essex Championship Marathon at Halstead. She has completed over 40 marathons and a personal best of 2 hours 38 minutes.
In 2013 she became the fastest women in the history of the World to run a marathon on all 7 continents in terms of the total number of hours taken. She is also the fastest woman to run a marathon on all 7 Continents Plus the North Pole – both in terms of the aggregate time and the elapsed days – an incredible achievement but made quite extraordinary given her disability.”
Fiona isn’t just an amazing vegan athlete, however, with all the time in the world to devote to training and fitness… Nope. She runs an animal sanctuary full-time. She mucks out, feeds, fundraises and generally maintains the Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary, with her partner. The sanctuary is run off adoptions, fundraising and donations. As an honorary patron of the Vegan Society, Fiona is the perfect role-model for those of us wanting to adopt a compassionate, vegan diet and a more sustainable lifestyle. Whenever I look at what she has achieved – and achieves every day – I give myself a sharp metaphorical elbow in the ribs and push myself to act more and achieve more, for the things I’m passionate about. We could all take a huge leaf out of Fiona’s book.
