Dolphins Rescued from the Mountains of Guatemala | Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project

This story from 2001 highlights why I have so much respect and admiration for Ric O’Barry. The article explains how he worked with WSPA in Guatemala to rescue and release two captive dolphins abandoned in a makeshift pit in the mountains with no food or filtration system. Efforts were made to prevent him from relocating these stranded and dying bottlenose dolphins (including death threats); but the government, the law, Ric and WSPA won the day and the dolphins were relocated to a sea pen before eventual release and integration into a nearby pod of wild dolphins.

Ric O’Barry is a hero for dolphins – from captive dolphin trainer to tireless campaigner and rescuer of suffering cetaceans. Take a look at Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project for more info (and don’t be confused by the Earth Island Institute’s Dolphin Project website).
